3 Reasons to Get Dry Needling for Tendonitis

Tendonitis or tendinosis is a serious condition of any particular tendon where there has been inflammation or degeneration of the tissue.  We will cover 3 Reasons to Get Dry Needling for Tendonitis in this post.

Dry Needling Helps to Reduce Pain and Improve Abnormal Movements

Dry needling is well documented for its effect on reducing the nervous system’s sensitivity to pain.  This is achieved partly by the release of naturally occurring opiates within the body that are released with the application of dry needling.  By reducing the level of threat perceived by the brain, it gives us access to begin moving the injured area in a productive manner which allows the body to begin to heal and regenerate the tissue.  Needling also can significantly improve abnormal movement patterns (biomechanics) to improve the efficiency of a body part.

Dry Needling Helps Increase Bloodflow

Now, I know that sounds really backwards as traditional treatment for Tendonitis is to ice, rest, compress.  But the latest research is actually showing us that if we can stimulate blood flow to carry oxygen rich blood and nutrient rich plasma to the area, it actually increases the ability for the body to heal.  At Executive PT, we also pair bloodflow restriction with dry needling to further amplify the blood low response (a topic for another day but bloodflow restriction also allows us to eliminate the need for high resistance which would increase the force on the damaged tissue).

Dry Needling Increases Cellular Regeneration and Normalize Tissue

Dry needling has been shown to significantly increase fibroblast activity, collagen proliferation, and aid in reducing tension in muscle trigger points which could put tension on the affected tendon.  The increased fibroblast and collagen helps to mature the affected tissue and grow so it can heal and be restored through progressive strengthening over time.
